FIFTEEN of us enjoyed good weather, and magnificent views, on a circular walk from the village of Trelawnyd, on the A5151 on September 14.

Instead of taking the Clwydian Way path south out of the village, we went, via the small lane by the parish church to reach a line of bridleways west, and followed these ‘tunnels through trees’ to Marian Mill, seeing the remains of the huge water mill there, before crossing a stream and heading across fields to Dyserth Waterfall.

We enjoyed our coffee break in the garden next to the 70-feet high falls and agreed that it was a place well worth the visit.

Rejoining our route, we turned north, following alongside the North Wales Path between Dyserth and Prestatyn, which is an old rail line, and now a pitched walking, and cycling route, between the two towns, and then up to this trail and then off it eastwards to climb up Craig Fawr 153m, which was land donated, to the National Trust, by Sir Geoffrey Summers, once the High Sheriff of Flintshire.

We enjoyed lunch at the summit, with magnificent views across to Snowdonia, Llandudno, Anglesey, Rhuddlan, and its castle, and the lush farmland inland from the coastal towns, of Prestatyn and Rhyl.

Coming down from there, we joined The Offa’s Dyke path north along the ridge of Prestatyn Hill (known locally by some as Prestatyn Mountain) 211m at its highest point, and the views were breathtaking and continuous as we walked the length of the ridge.

We then walked down onto a steep road, walking for a short way to reach a viewpoint with terraces and plenty of seating at Hillside Gardens where we had an afternoon break overlooking Prestatyn, and before we carried on steeply up Gwaenysgor Road, before cutting off to turn east again across fields on the Clwydian Way.

During this stretch of the walk tumuli could be seen, which could date from between 2,900 to 800BC. Turning south, beyond Acre Wood, 12 headed back to Trelawnyd, while three headed up the round Gop Hill 251m where they had an almost 360° view of the surrounding countryside, before joining us at our start point, the very welcoming Crown Inn.
