Extra Special Fleurie, £6,57, Asda
While supermarket power can be partly blamed for the recent demise of retailers like Oddbins they do keep prices keen, writes Nicholas Nunn.
Here's the first of two own brand examples from Asda's 'Extra Special' range which prove the point.
Fleurie is the most delicate type of Beaujolais and also the normally the most expensive. But this silky-smooth, floral-nosed, 100% gamay grape red would still be good value at £2 more.
Just 13% alcohol and screw-topped too.
Extra Special Gavi, £5, Asda
Gavi is a lovely light white made with the native Cortese grape in the north west of Italy in the region of Piedmont around a town called...Gavi!
It is dry, lemony and not unlike white French Burgundy except that it is at least 50% cheaper. At £5 a bottle you almost want to clear the shelves and stock up for the summer.
The alcohol level is a sensible 12.5% and it tastes lovely with chicken, fish - or just as it comes.
