SUMMER may have been washed away by the wet weather but enjoy the climate of the tropics at the Palace Theatre in Manchester.

It will be staging a grand production of tropical hit South Pacific, featuring talented youngsters from across the north west.

The two-week project has given young people aged between 10 and 21 the chance to work with a professional production team to rehearse the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical.

Set on a small island in the south Pacific during the Second World War, a US Navy nurse falls in love with a local plantation owner. The bored marines based on the island sneak off to the island called Bali Ha'i were Lieutenant Joe Cable is introduced to the beautiful Liat.

As the war rages on the marines are sent into battle, but will they survive the ravages of war?

The show features well-known songs such as I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair, Some Enchanted Evening and Happy Talk.

South Pacific runs from Thursday, August 24, until Saturday, August 26, with tickets - from £8 to £12 - available by calling 0870 401 3000.
