Estevez Cabernet Carmenere Syrah 2013, £4.99, Aldi
Less than a fiver is an astonishingly low price for this chunky Chilean blend of three red grapes including Carmenere which the South American state has made its own.
Plums and cherries with blackcurrant and a touch of tobacco make up a very tasty mouthful.
Alcohol is 13.5% and this quality is rare indeed at £4.99.
Freeman’s Bay Pinot Gris 2014, £5.69, Aldi
Another Aldi own brand all the way from New Zealand made with Pinot Gris grapes which give much more interesting flavours than the country’s big white grape, Sauvignon Blanc.
Melon, pear and even a bit of mango make it an ideal choice with Thai or Chinese foods and other spicy delicacies. Alcohol level is 13% and the price is certainly right.
