Tiger Horse Chenin Pinot Grigio 2013, £7.25, Sainsbury’s
Tiger Horse is the English translation of the Latin name Victorian explorers gave to the zebra, an African creature that fascinated them.
That’s not got much to do with this wine though except that it’s from South Africa’s Western Cape region and is an interesting mix of Chenin Blanc and Pinot Grigio grapes, 13% alcohol and refreshingly different.
Vinalba Reservado 2012, £10, Sainsbury’s
Another blend here too but this time made from top red grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Merlot.
The wine is from the Mendoza region of Argentina and it has big, black fruit flavours, lots of dark chocolate and a heavyweight alcohol level of 14.5%.
Steaks or meat dishes like lamb shank will go well with this hearty winter warmer.
