Fontenoi Fitou 2012, £7.99, Tesco
Fitou was the first wine appellation of the Languedoc region of southern France near the Mediterranean coast and twenty years ago it was an extremely popular red here.
Now there are many, many other types produced in the region but this 13.5% black cherry mix of Carignan, Grenache and Shiraz grapes is still good value.
Casa Planeta White 2013, £7.99, Co-op
Also £7.99 until August 26 (it’s usually £9.99) is this interesting offering from Sicily in Italy’s deep south.
It’s half Grecanico grapes (which sound Greek but are actually native to this area) and half Chardonnay and the result is a blend of lime and pineapple flavours full of citrus. A refreshing different 12.5% white.
