Les Jamelles Viognier 2013, £6.49, Co-op
The first of two whites this week made from grapes you might not be familiar with.
Viognier is fast becoming fashionable because of lovely apricot and fresh peach flavours that make it ideal for summer days with a wide variety of food.
This example from the Pays d’Oc region in the south of France is 13% alcohol and well-priced.
Venturer Rueda Verdejo 2013, £4.99, Aldi
Verdejo, not to be confused with Verdelho from neighbouring Portugal, is a grape unique to Spain’s Rueda region.
It has lemon, grapefruit and citrus tastes and a lot of similarity to world famous Sauvignon Blanc.
What’s strikingly different about this 12% version is the almost unbelievable fact that Aldi get it on the shelves for less than a fiver.
