WARRINGTON Quasar is hoping to blast its way into the record books with the longest laser tag marathon.
Forty players are getting combat ready for a 24 hour laser battle at Evans House in Norman Street on September 21.
The Guinness World Record attempt will see two teams of 20 compete from 4pm on Saturday to 4pm on Sunday with just 10 seconds between games.
And the challenge has already attracted players from the United States and Sweden.
Garry Simcock, manager of Warrington Quasar, said: “When we decided to do this I thought it would be a Warrington thing.
“But when it reached America and Sweden I realised how powerful the World Record concept is.
“It’s never been done before and it’s going to be a real challenge for everybody playing.
“It will also be a challenge for us to get it right so we have a good chance of getting in the record books and putting Warrington on the map.”
Garry has been putting players to the test with 12 hour trial runs, the last of which will be on Saturday, September 7.
But the official record attempt will see contestants given just a five minute break every hour.
Garry, who has run Warrington Quasar for four years, added: “When we did the first trial we quickly came to the conclusion that the secret isn’t getting the top score but simply getting to the end.
“It’s all about stamina. It’s a very active game so it will be quite difficult to play in a more sedate way. It’s going to be tough and all about working together.”
All 40 players will also be encouraged to gain sponsorship to raise money and awareness for Warrington Youth Club which provides after-school support and facilities for underprivileged children.
With dark corridors illuminated only by blinking lights and lasers, Garry described the Quasar arena as ‘like your front room on Christmas Eve night’.
So how will players fend off fatigue?
Garry said: “Our responsibility will be to provide decent music to keep people active and upbeat.
“Hopefully friends and family will be coming to cheer them on and we’re also looking for an energy drink supplier!”
