THE 2019 Magic Weekend looks set to move to Liverpool after Anfield emerged as the favourite to host the concept next year.

The Warrington Guardian understands that, after four years at Newcastle’s St James’ Park, rugby league’s annual festival is set to be moved to the 54,000-capacity home of Liverpool FC – which is just 18 miles away from Warrington.

A crowd of just over 26,000 watched the second Test between England and New Zealand at Anfield on Sunday.

When the fixtures for the new Super League season were released on Tuesday, the RFL confirmed that the annual Magic Weekend round would be held over the second Bank Holiday weekend in May – which falls on May 25-26.

The venue and fixtures will not be confirmed until next week but it is thought Anfield, which hosted the second Test between England and New Zealand on Sunday in front of a crowd of 26,234, is the heavy favourite.

A potential stumbling block is that the Liverpool Marathon is scheduled for Sunday, May 26, and the route takes runners around the outside of the stadium.

However, if the move is confirmed as expected, Liverpool will become the fifth Magic Weekend host city after Cardiff, Edinburgh, Manchester and Newcastle.

Super League’s new structure means each team will face seven of their other 11 rivals three times and the other four twice.

By that token, Warrington Wolves can expect to face one of Wigan Warriors, Leeds Rhinos, Huddersfield Giants, Hull FC or London Broncos at Magic Weekend.

Wherever the concept moves to – and whoever they are playing – The Wire will aim to reverse a wretched recent record at Magic Weekend.

Their last Magic Weekend victory came against St Helens in 2014 at Manchester’s Etihad Stadium.
