STEVE Price insists complacency will not be a problem for his Wire squad as they look to extend their winning run at Salford Red Devils tomorrow, Saturday, kick off 3.15pm.
The Wire picked up maximum points over the Easter weekend, with Monday’s 18-6 victory at Castleford Tigers coming three days after a 32-18 win in the Good Friday ‘derby’ against Widnes Vikings at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.
They have now won four games in a row and sit third in the Super League table, but Price is refusing to get carried away.
“It’s only early days. We don’t look at the league ladder here,” he told the Guardian.
“We just focus on improving the areas in which we certainly need to be better. As a group, we’re aware of what those areas are.
“There’ll be no complacency here.It is all about this week now.
“We can’t control what’s happened in weeks before this one.
“It’s about Salford this weekend, putting in a strong performance there and keep slowly getting better.
“We haven’t done anything yet. It’s important that we keep backing it up and put in a really strong performance on Saturday.”
Ben Murdoch-Masila misses out on a first return to the AJ Bell Stadium since leaving the Red Devils as a medial knee ligament injury will keep him out for up to four weeks.
Centre Bryson Goodwin will be assessed after missing the Castleford victory through illness, but Dec Patton is available again after completing a five-match suspension for the red card he received in the defeat at Hull FC on March 2.
Price says Patton’s return to contention could act as a boost for the burgeoning half-back partnership between Kevin Brown and Tyrone Roberts.
“We’re healthy and we have a lot of players pushing for that 17. That’s what I like,” he said.
“Dec’s been smashing himself and doing a lot of extras while he’s been off. He just wants to get back playing now.
“There’s other players like Morgan Smith and Harvey Livett who are also pushing for that 17th spot in the team as well.
“That spine is certainly getting stronger each week. I was really pleased with them on Monday.
“That was probably the best performance our half-backs have put in. They were really tough and gritty throughout the game.
“It’s important they keep working really hard on their game and growing because the players behind them are certainly chomping at the bit to get their opportunity.”
Saturday’s game will be The Wire’s third in eight days as they battle to recover from the Easter period.
With the Castleford game taking place on an extremely heavy pitch, Price is wary that the intensity of training will have to be dialled down in order to preserve his players’ energy.
“Having a relatively healthy squad at this stage is a bonus, but Easter has its biggest effect two or three weeks further on,” he said.
“As a high performance group, we’ve spoken about that and how we’re going to manage that.
“We have to consider the training workloads and its really important we get that right.
“We came through Easter pretty good. In extreme conditions on Monday, it’s a credit to the guys for how they executed the gameplan.
“It was a very good performance against a very good football team.
“You do have to be careful, but I’ve got all the confidence in the staff to get that right.”
