WIRE great Brian Bevan is in contention to join a very prestigious club in rugby league.
The try-scoring sensation, who crossed a remarkable 740 times in 620 appearances for The Wire between 1945 and 1962, is on a 10-man shortlist to be named the next Rugby League Immortal.
Only eight men are currently considered as Rugby League Immortals – a group of players whose name will never die in the game – including former Warrington half-back Andrew Johns, who was the last man inducted in 2012.
Warrington-born Bob Fulton, who played for the club between 1969 and 1970, is also a member of the exclusive club.
Another ex-Wire player is also on the shortlist in the shape of Dave Brown, who made 93 appearances for the club between 1937 and 1939 and went on to captain the Australian Test team six times.
A panel of 12 people compiled by the NRL will submit their votes and either one or two players will be inducted at a gala dinner in Sydney on August 1.
Full shortlist: Brian Bevan, Dave Brown, Frank Burge, Ron Coote, Duncan Hall, Ken Irvine, Darren Lockyer, Mal Meninga, Dally Messenger, Norm Provan.
Rugby League Immortals: Clive Churchill, Bob Fulton, Reg Gasnier, Johnny Raper, Graeme Langlands, Wally Lewis, Arthur Beetson, Andrew Johns.
