GLAZEBURY kicked off the new season in style with a dominant eight-wicket win over Saughall at Hurst Lane on Saturday.
After winning the toss and inviting their Chester-based opponents to bat first, Glazebury captain Sam Stanier led the way with the ball as he took 5-22 to rip through the Saughall batting order.
Dave Acton also chipped in with 2-19 as the visitors were dismissed for just 84, giving Glazebury a simple target to chase.
Openers Jack Warhurst and Wayne Hargreaves took the game completely away from Saughall with a composed opening stand of 45.
Hargreaves eventually fell, but Warhurst remained unbeaten on 48 along with Acton (17 not out) as Glazebury cantered home with time to spare.
The club’s seconds were also in action and got their season up and running with a crushing 147-run win over Ashley.
Antony Meulman blasted ten fours and five sixes in a stunning innings of 91 as Glazebury racked up an imposing 265-7 from their 45 overs after being asked to bat first.
Wicketkeeper Michael Nutkins (36), captain Dave Nicholson (34) and opener Phil McCue (30) provided able support to Meulman as a number of players hit form to set Ashley an improbable target to win the game.
Early wickets then tumbled as Ashley slumped to 17-5 in reply, with Nicholson grabbing three wickets and Hakeem Dahou picking up two to effectively take the game away from the visitors.
Oliver Mazarelo (33) and Darren Griffiths (34) belligerently resisted for a while, but they were never a threat to Glazebury’s total and McCue picked up three late wickets to seal a crushing win and a full 25-point haul.
Both Glazebury sides are in action on Saturday afternoon, with the firsts travelling to Cholmondeley and the seconds facing a home clash with local rivals Rylands.
