TONY Smith has shed further light on who is likely to pull on a Warrington shirt next season.
Wolves’ head of coaching and rugby confirmed the club will add at least one more signing to their ranks, while Roy Asotasi will head back to Australia.
The club are thought to be in the market for a prop to replace 33-year-old Asotasi.
The former New Zealand captain, who signed for Wolves at the beginning of the 2014 season, is out of contract at the end of the current campaign.
“Roy is going back to Australia to take up his gym opportunity, he owns a gym over there already,” explained Smith, while confirming Wolves will look to strengthen further in the off-season.
“Whether Roy’s retiring I can’t be sure, but he’ll be heading back to Australia.”
Gary Wheeler and Joe Philbin are also nearing the end of their deals, with Smith saying he expects the young forward to stay.
However, no decision has been made on the future of loanees Tom Walker, at Workington Town, or Glenn Riley, London Broncos.
“Philbin is with us,” added Smith. “We’re undecided on Gaz. He’s playing for his future.
“No decision has been made (on the loan players). I think both are off contract at the end of the season.”
Warrington fans are unlikely to see injured players Gene Ormsby, Ben Evans, Anthony England or James Laithwaite before the end of the season.
Rhys Evans also misses out this week after aggravating his shoulder in the defeat to Castleford.
Chris Bridge has a chance of returning, while Matty Russell has had an ankle operated on and Smith is hopeful he may be back for the final game of the Super 8s.
“Injuries have ruled just about all of those out,” added Smith.
“Ben got so far with his hamstring rehabilitation but he’s found a little bit of complication, so it’s unlikely for him for this year.”
Wolves dominated for long spells in the one-point loss at Castleford last Thursday without scoring and Smith said that has been put to practice ahead of Wigan Warriors’ visit tomorrow, Friday, kick off 8pm.
Warrington enter Super 8s Round Three six points adrift of a play-offs spot.
“Unfortunately we weren’t clinical enough in areas we needed to be,” added Smith.
“You practice, you take options and practice, and work out which options are the best ones.
“We need to perform this week regardless of whether we’re in with a chance or not. We’ve not got a chance if we don’t perform well.
“If we do that, as we showed last time we played Wigan, we can come out with a good result – we’re not spending a whole lot of time analysing the points table.”
