DETECTIVES are disappointed with the response to an appeal to find the attacker of Halifax fan David Singer.

Police appealed to more than one million rugby league fans on Saturday at the Grand Final at Old Trafford.

But officers received only a small number of calls about the serious assault and believe more people have information and have not yet come forward.

Mr Singer, aged 32, was assaulted as he made his way to the car park next to the DHL building on Dallam Lane after watching his team, Halifax, play Featherstone at the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Sunday, September 26.

He has been fighting for his life in a coma since.

DI Stephen Jones, of the Cheshire Constabulary Major Investigation Team, said: “When you consider over a million people would have heard or seen the police appeal, the small number of calls we received is disappointing.

“I know that the assault on David was witnessed by both Featherstone and Halifax supporters. I also believe that other Halifax supporters were verbally abused and had aggression directed towards them as they left the stadium - perhaps by those responsible for assaulting David Singer. The fans hold the answer to who attacked David, and I would urge anyone with any information to come forward and make contact with police.”

The people who attacked Mr Singer were wearing Featherstone colours and were targeting Halifax fans as they walked towards their coaches according to police.

Coaches containing Featherstone fans drove past as the assault took place.

Anyone who saw anything or anyone who was physically abused following the match, or anyone with information should call the police on 0845 458 0000 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
