PERFORMING U-turns at a traffic light junction on a main route through the town could soon be banned.
Warrington Borough Council has published a Road Traffic Regulation Act notice for the A49 Newton Road in Winwick.
This seeks to prohibit vehicles proceeding along the Newton Road towards Delph Lane in a northerly direction from making a U-turn at the traffic lights, so as to proceed southerly in the opposite direction.
In a statement of reasons, the council said: “Numerous vehicles have been observed to contravene the red traffic signal and perform a U-Turn prior to turning left into Townfield Lane.
“This has resulted in conflict with southbound and right turning vehicles on A49, and potentially pedestrians using the controlled facility to cross A49.
“This also increases the potential for rear-end shunt collisions, as vehicles travelling northbound would not expect vehicles to slow and wait within the junction.”
Any representations, both in support or objecting to the proposals, must be submitted in writing either to: Legal Services, East Annexe, Town Hall, Sankey Street, Warrington, WA1 1UH
They can also be emailed with full contact details to TROrepresentations@warrington.gov.uk by May 9, and all objections must specify the grounds on which they are made.
