THE leaves are changing colour and falling to the ground, the mornings are frosty and Halloween is in our sites.

And that can mean only one thing – pumpkins are ripe for picking at farms across Warrington.

Here are the best places in town to pick up a pumpkin ready for Halloween.

There are thousands of pumpkins in seven different varieties at Lymm Pumpkin Patch and you can pick your own each weekend in October between 10am and 4pm.

The doors will also be open during October half term, which is the last week of the month.

There’s a treasure hunt and a photo competition, featuring pictures of carved pumpkins.

Large bookings can be made for playgroups, nurseries and schools on weekdays and dogs are welcome at the pumpkin patch as long as they are on a lead.

Pumpkin picking is available at Grange Farm Lowton between Saturday, October 8 and Monday, October 31.

Tickets are priced at £10 per family of five with tickets for additional members costing £2.50 and these are available to purchase from the farm’s website.

The entertainment – children’s entertainers, a fair and Halloween crafts as well as a haunted bus, a carving barn and a spooky maze - will be on each weekend and at October half term (the last week of the month).

Home-grown pumpkins are ready for picking at Kenyon Hall Farm with thousands to choose from in all shapes, sizes and colours.

The farm has been growing pumpkins for more than 30 years and is Warrington’s original pumpkin patch run by the Bulmer family – Tod and Barbara with sons Simon and James.

This year, the family will be welcoming around 15,000 visitors to their pumpkin festival and there will be homemade treats available from the café including pumpkin soup, pumpkin cake and pumpkin spiced lattes.

Farmer Ted Blumer said: “We’re Warrington’s original pumpkin patch and have been growing pumpkins here at Kenyon Hall Farm for more than 30 years.

“This year’s Pumpkin Festival is going to be our biggest and best with more pumpkins, more photo opportunities and more Halloween treats than ever.

“We can’t wait to welcome you to pick your perfect pumpkin.”

Tickets for the festival are priced at £2.50 per person throughout October.

The Hayloft, Sandy Lane, Bold Heath

The Hayloft opened their pumpkin patch and spooky maze at the end of September and it will be open every day in October apart from Monday, October 3 when they will be closed all day.

From Monday, October 17 there will be twilight opening until 7pm with the coffee shop open until 4.30pm as well as the horsebox until 6.30pm.

There are giant pumpkins, quirky gourds and spooky squashes in all shapes, sizes and colours in the 30-acre grounds.

There’s no need to book – you simply pay for what you pick.

Pumpkins that are picked early can be safely stored in a cool dry place until you’re ready to carve them for Halloween.

The spooky maze will also be open with tickets priced at £2.50 for children and £3.50 for adults, a miniature railway and tractor rides as well as pick your own sweetcorn.

Pumpkins will be available at Bates Farm over three weekends in October – October 15 and 16, 22 and 23, and 29 and 30 between 10am and 4pm.

Bookings must be made in advance and tickets are £2.50 per visitor with under ones being free.

You can enjoy face painting and refreshments as well as farm tours where you’ll meet the cattle, sheep and turkeys.

Farmer Berties

Farmer Bertie’s, Warrington Road, Glazebury

There are pink pumpkins available at Farmer Bertie’s this year with all proceeds going to Cancer Research UK.

A spokesperson on the farm said: “For the past two years, Farmer Bertie has worked very hard to grow pink pumpkins and it’s been a success!

“He’s decided that all proceeds from every pink pumpkin that’s sold will go to charity.

“Cancer Research UK is a charity that is close to many people’s hearts so come and show your support.”

The Coffee Stop will be on the farm providing refreshments – hot and cold drinks as well as tray bake cakes – and Mobberley Ice Cream Company will be selling the homemade ice cream.

This year, there is an indoor pedal tractor area which is suitable for children of all ages and a seated picnic area.

There’s no need to book for pumpkin picking and there is no entrance fee.

The farm will be open for pumpkin picking between October 14 and October 31.
