MONPURA has only been open for nine months but it’s already winning awards.

The busy Stockton Heath restaurant, which serves unique south Asian cuisine, has scooped Warrington’s Best Curry 2022 honour and has clearly made a great first impression with the town’s diners.

Since its launch at the end of April, the Best of 2022 competition has named winners in 19 different categories.

Top honours for hair, nails, beauty, fitness, gym, children and independent shop have been given out as well as those for fish and chips, pies, pubs, beer garden, café, breakfast, afternoon tea, roast dinner, pizza, burger and dessert already decided.

Voting is currently taking place in the latest round of the competition with the award for Best Restaurant 2022 up for grabs, with a closing date of midnight on Monday, September 12.

Next up we have been searching for the town’s best curry and Monpura took the number one spot beating off tough competition from several of Warrington’s long-standing curry restaurants.

Manager Naz Miah and chef Shuhag Islam, who worked at The Cottage on Church Street for 17 years, opened Monpura two weeks before Christmas last year after spotting a ‘to let’ sign on the former Little Box of Treats building on Walton Road.

After waiting seven months for planning permission, they spent nearly £97,000 on renovating the building after it was damp and had a leak in the roof.

Interestingly, the name Monpura comes from an island in Bangladesh, but it also means having your mind fulfilled and Naz wants customers to have their minds fulfilled as they eat.

The venue serves Bangladeshi and Indian cuisine with visitors enjoying chicken ratargul – diced battered chicken with stir fried onion and peppers with a sweet and medium heat sauce served with rice getting the thumbs up.

Other popular dishes include chicken or lamb khubsurat which is served with a separate vegetable curry sauce and zil mil chicken which is a started served in a Thai medium spiced sauce.

Naz said: “All of our food is prepared fresh every day and we take our time creating each individual dish.

“We’re very happy to win Best Curry 2022 and a little surprised as we’re such a new restaurant.

“But our customers have supported us since day one and voted for us to win.

“We’re very grateful to them for all their support.”

With a menu revamp coming just last month, there promises to be something to suit all appetites and tastes at Monpura including a wide range of vegetarian and vegan dishes.

The restaurant is open seven days a week – Monday to Thursday between 5pm and 10pm, Fridays and Saturdays from 4.30pm until 11pm and between 4pm and 10pm each Sunday.
