WHEN you’ve been welcoming customers into your family-run pub for three decades, you know what people like and what makes them want to return for another visit.

With views of the water on a sunny summer’s day teamed with a cold refreshing drink, it’s no surprise that The Ferry Tavern in Penketh has been crowned Best Beer Garden 2022.

Since its launch at the end of April, the Best of 2022 competition has named winners in 13 different categories.

Top honours for hair, nails, beauty, fitness and independent shop have been given out as well as those for fish and chips, pies, pubs, breakfast, afternoon tea, roast dinner and pizza already decided.

Voting is currently taking place in the latest round of the competition with the award for Best for Children up for grabs.

Next up we were searching for the town’s best beer garden and The Ferry Tavern’s loyal customers voted for their favourite local to win, resulting in a landslide victory.

The Station Road venue is no stranger to our Best of 2022 competition having made the shortlist for Warrington’s Best Pub.

Nominations for this venue to win an award for its beer garden said it was their “favourite pub” and “there aren’t many with views like The Ferry”.

Andy and Jade Mulholland took over at the pumps in 2005 with Jade having grown up in the pub when her parents became landlord and landlady in 1992.

Andy knows they’re lucky with the pub’s waterside location, which makes for stunning views from the now award-winning beer garden.

Andy said: “It’s definitely unique.

“We’re on the Trans Pennine Trail so we do get some surprise visitors who come off the main road and we’re not what they’re expecting!

“We have seasonal regulars who come for a drink during the summer and we also have our loyal customers who come all year round.

“It’s fantastic that they’ve supported us and voted for us to win this award.”

The Ferry used to serve fish and chips – a popular choice for thirsty customers who felt a bit peckish – but since Covid-19 lockdowns they have been unable to relaunch the food menu.

They now hold regular theme nights and have pop up events with Snoutwood Trotters and Cheshire Pizza Company catering for hungry guests.

Having spent 25 consecutive years in The Good Beer Guide, CAMRA will be presenting Andy and Jade with a special award later this year.
