A MAN has been charged with dangerous driving after a security guard was run over while attempting to foil a break-in at a warehouse.

Police arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder after the incident at Plastic Omnium’s base on Omega in the early hours of yesterday, Wednesday.

Detectives have since charged Ian Abley with dangerous driving, failing to stop after an accident and two counts of theft in relation to the incident.

The 25-year-old, from Liverpool, is due to appear before Warrington Magistrates Court tomorrow, Friday, in order to face these charges.

A silver Ford Transit van entered the grounds of the premises on Skyline Drive at around 1am.

Several offenders got out of the vehicle and stole two mopeds before attempting to flee the scene.

As they drove off, a 23-year-old security guard was hit by the van – which was ‘deliberately driven at him – as he attempted to stop the burglars from driving through the exit gates.

He was rushed to hospital after suffering serious injuries to his hand and leg, but has since been discharged.

The van was found abandoned in the Belle Vale area of Liverpool a few hours later.

Detective sergeant Mark Naylor earlier said: “The security guard was seriously injured as he tried to stop the van leaving the grounds, and we are doing all we can to identify those involved in the incident.

“We have been conducting a number of enquiries, and as part of our investigation I am keen to hear from anyone who may have seen a Transit van acting suspiciously in the area or saw an altercation at the gates.

“The two mopeds have not yet been recovered, and I would appeal to anyone who saw them being unloaded after they had been stolen to contact us.

“I also want to urge anyone who has dash cam footage or any information which could assist the investigation to get in touch.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact Cheshire Police on 101, quoting incident number IML837972, or to contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
