WARRINGTON Town boss Paul Carden has beefed up his squad with the signing of four new players.
Full-back Shaun Beeley arrives from Barrow, while centre-backs Liam Goulding and Jack Higgins have been brought in from Wealdstone and York City respectively.
Winger Joe Mwasile, who spent last season with Nantwich Town, has also joined the squad.
The quartet’s arrival at Cantilever Park brings the number of new arrivals this summer to seven, with Connor Hughes, Josh Hine and Tony Gray already secured.
It has also been confirmed that skipper Jay McCarten, goalkeeper Tony McMillan and striker Ruben Jerome will be returning next season and Carden says he is pleased with how his squad is coming together.
The Yellows boss also said each of his three new defenders was able to bring something different to the table while Mwasile will give them pace out wide “I couldn’t believe it when I got the call from Shaun Beeley’s agent to say he was available. I sort of dismissed it at first as I thought he’d get a full-time deal,” he said.
“He said he was sick of chasing full-time football at 28 and wanted to devote more time to his teaching career while still playing for a club with ambition.
“Shaun will give us a real calming presence in defence as well as being excellent going forward from full-back.
“Jack is a good age for us, is an intelligent lad and spent last season playing Conference football.
“He’s an old-school centre half, an organiser and a leader. He’ll compliment the other options we have at the back.
“Liam is a very elegant player and is extremely comfortable on the ball. He can play at centre-half, at right-back and in midfield.
“Joe has got extreme pace. He’s had a bit of an up-and-down summer but we’ve been there to pick up the pieces.
“He gives us a different option out wide to what we already have in Connor Hughes and Dylan Vassallo.”
Yellows returned to pre-season training on Saturday, but player-coach Craig Robinson was not among them as he has moved on to prolong his playing career.
Famous for scoring Town’s winner in the FA Cup first round victory over League Two side Exeter in 2014, Robinson has signed for City of Liverpool.
Carden says Robinson “had an itch” to continue playing and said it would have been unfair to stand in his way.
“I always encourage people to play for as long as they can as once you stop, you can’t start again,” he said.
“Robbo had that itch to carry on and he’s still more than capable at that level.
“There will be no replacement as such, Mark Beesley and Adam Carden are already here and we all muck in together.
“Adam helps in a number of ways. He’ll be registered as a player but he can do coaching and a bit of scouting as he has great connections.
“We’ve kept a tight number in training rather than swamping the squad with triallists.
“That’s what goes on at other clubs at this level but we’ve managed to avoid it and I’m really pleased with the work we’ve got through so far.”
Yellows play their first pre-season friendly on Tuesday when they visit Barnton, kick off 7.45pm.
