THE M6 has reopened following an evening of traffic chaos.
Roads across Warrington became gridlocked after a closure of the M6 earlier on Friday.
Firefighters rushed to the scene following reports that a lorry was on fire following a chemical spill on the southbound carriageway at 3.30pm.
The motorway was closed between junction 22 at Newton Le Willows and junction 23 at Haydock at 3.45pm, The road was reopened northbound at 7.50pm.
Traffic was queuing back to junction 17 northbound at Sandbach and Crewe and junction 25 southbound at Bryn.
Diversion routes were in operation, but there was extremely heavy traffic around Warrington as a result if the incident.
