TRIBUTES have been pouring in for Warrington Wolves legend Greg Mackey after it was confirmed the 90s club captain had sadly lost his battle with cancer. 

Nicknamed 'Bluey', the 52-year-old fans' favourite holds the club record for most consecutive appearances between 1992 and 1995 before succumbing to a shoulder injury.

August this year marked 25 years since the bubbly little general made a stunning debut in primrose and blue with many fans reminiscing online over their favourite Mackey moments. 

Former teammate Paul Cullen said: "Bluey fought this terrible disease with the courage and dignity we knew he would. 

"He endured the pain of further chemotherapy in exchange for vital time with his beloved family.

"His priorities were always right, family, friends and footy.

"He was as tough as any one I've ever met. It was an honour and pleasure to be his friend."

As previously reported in the Warrington Guardian, the father-of-three was diagnosed with bowel cancer in December 2011 and after years of operations and chemotherapy had been told his condition was terminal earlier this year. 

The club have confirmed despite Greg's brave battle, he had passed away peacefully today.

Fans rallied around to support fundraising for the grandfather's treatment with more than £11,000 raised so far. 

Following his time in England, Greg and his family returned to Sydney, where he worked in the telecoms industry. 

He leaves a wife Amanda, three children Kane, Ebony and Tom and identical twin granddaughters Grace and Lillian.
