A LORRY driver whose vehicle collided with a barrier on the M56 has died, Cheshire Police has confirmed.
Police say the lorry was travelling westbound at 10.15am today, Tuesday, when it collided with barriers on the Weaver Viaduct, smashing them, and stopping on an embankment.
Fire crews worked to reach the cab of the HGV, but police say the driver suffered fatal injuries in the incident.
The man has not been identified, with his next of kin being contacted by police.
The motorway remains partially closed on the westbound carriageway between junction 12, Runcorn, and junction 14, Hapsford.
Emergency services remain at the scene near to junction 12.
The motorway's westbound carriageway was completely closed for several hours, although lane three has since been reopened.
Police say teams are working to open a second lane, as rush hour approaches.
The lorry needs to be recovered, the barriers repaired, and a fuel spillage cleared.
Congestion has built up on the motorway and in surrounding areas, with Warrington drivers warned anyone leaving towards Chester is likely to be affected.
Police are renewing their appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to call 101, quoting incident number 211 of 12/08/2014.
