TRAVELLERS camped in Culcheth were escorted out of the town by police today, Monday, after setting up an illegal site in Warrington.

But a different group have now taken up residence in Woolston.

Around 10 caravans are currently on Woolston Park after relocating there on Sunday.

Officials from the council visited on Monday to serve notice of eviction with Cheshire Police monitoring the situation.

But the travellers are set to remain in place for a few days, as a ‘direction to leave’ order is required from court.

Insp Chris Adkins, of Warrington East NPU, said: “We will deal with any concerns of residents, and will monitor the campsite.

"Otherwise, the only way police will be involved is if the eviction notice is resisted.”

Alex Eaton, chairman of Friends of Woolston Park, claimed people in the campsite have been seen urinating and dumping rubbish.

He said: “The gates had been locked but now the padlock has gone.

“The mess they have made is unbelievable and people have been seen urinating in bushes.”

The news of the makeshift camp in Woolston will come as a bitter blow to residents following the removal of another travellers’ site in Culcheth.

The group, which took up residence on land off Common Lane on Wednesday before moving to privately-owned land off Warrington Road, were given their marching orders on Sunday after they were handed a section 61 notice.

Officers confirmed that the group had moved from the land by 2pm today, Monday, but had relocated to a children’s play area off Insall Road and Valiant Close in Padgate.

The group were told to move from the area by police at 3.30pm who followed the travellers out of the town as they drove up the M6.

Their presence has prompted a number of complaints with Cheshire Police increasing its presence in the area following a spike in reports at the weekend.

Since the group moved into the area, police were called to deal with an assault on a family outside their home.

It was also reported that a 16-year-old boy was threatened and a small quantity of beer was stolen from a shop.

A red car was seized on Warrington Road on Friday, which is believed to have been involved in the incidents.

And a disturbance reportedly involving travellers happened at the Noggin Inn, Warrington Road, Risley, on Sunday night.

Residents said on Facebook they had witnessed a large group drinking in the pub, and were 'bullied'.

Police were called there at 6.40pm to reports of an assault but no formal complaints or arrests were made.
