STUART Wellstead has stepped down from his role as player/co-manager of Rylands, the club have confirmed.

The striker formed part of a managerial duo with Dave McNabb that saw Blues promoted to the North West Counties League Premier Division at the first time of asking and finished as the club’s top goalscorer in the process.

However, he has decided to prolong his playing career by joining fellow Wythenshawe Town.

McNabb will now take sole charge of the first team, with Fraser Ablett continuing as assistant manager.

Wellstead insists there is no animosity behind his departure, which was motivated purely by a desire to continue playing.

“I’d just like to put on record thanks to all the players, supporters and committee for a wonderful time last season,” he said.

“The lads were first class all season and it was a pleasure to play alongside them.

“A special mention to Dave and the management team – Dave has been a credit to the club from day one and always has conducted himself in the right way.

“There is absolutely no animosity between us and we will remain friends for sure.

“I just want to play football matches which has led to my decision to leave.

“Rylands are left in great hands and I’m sure they will have a very successful season, it’s great to see them growing how they are.”

Blues’ first game without Wellstead sees them welcome Avro to Gorsey Lane on Saturday, kick off 3pm.
