A COUNCILLOR concerned over the colour of a school entrance being white warned it is ‘not the place for a Spanish villa’.

Plans for the entrance at Bridgewater High School’s upper site in Appleton, on Broomfields Road, were approved by the development management committee on Wednesday.

But it sparked concerns from Cllr Judith Wheeler (LD – Appleton).

She believes the proposed white exterior would be ‘obtrusive’ and told fellow members it is ‘not the place for a Spanish villa’.

“There are residents who will overlook it,” she added.

“I am very aware that we do not have white buildings like this.

“It’s just going to be very obvious and I really don’t think it is going to be in keeping with the area.

“I am not happy with it.”

But committee chairman Cllr Tony McCarthy (LAB – Rixton and Woolston) put forward his views on the matter.

He said: “If the school is happy with the colour who are we to disagree with it?”

The new entrance will be developed to the north of the building with a glazed canopy overhead and new door access.

Signage will form a part of a separate planning application.

Council officers said the ‘minor alterations’ will bring a level of ‘aesthetic improvement’ and, as such, are acceptable.

They added the proposal is considered to ‘harmonise with the overall scale and proportions’ and is not deemed to have a detrimental impact on the street scene.
